Switching Between Mac and Windows
From Witopiawiki
If you're Switching Platforms Permanently (Not sharing one account on both a Mac and a PC)
If you're switching for good and not going back anytime soon, use our re-doer tool here This will invalidate your old openVPN/SSL files and build you a new personalVPN Installer supporting the platform of your choice (Mac or Windows). Again, this does cancel forever any previous installations so be sure.
Otherwise
You have personalVPN-SSL for Mac OS X and wish to use your VPN account on your Windows PC
- Make certain you are running Windows with FULL Administrator Rights, not under a User account you created. This should be the case by default if you never created a User Account.
- Download and install personalVPN-SSL software for Windows from here
- NOTE: You MUST right click on the installer and choose to run as Windows Vista under the "Compatibility" tab, save and then right click on the installer and choose to run as administrator. If not, then you will get a error that says it does not support windows.
- Find your user security credentials.
- If using Tunnelblick
- Copy your security credentials (ca.crt, config.conf, key.key & cert.crt) on your Mac from the "openvpn" folder in your User Library located here: ~/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations/ (double-click on your Macintosh HD -> Users -> home folder -> Library -> Application Support -> Tunnelblick -> Configurations) to a CD, USB drive, or via some other method, to your PC.
- If using Viscosity
- Copy your security credentials (ca.crt, config.conf, name.key & name.crt) on your Mac from the "OpenVPN" folder in your User Library located here: ~/Library/Application Support/Viscosity/OpenVPN/1 (double-click on Macintosh HD -> Users -> home folder -> Library -> Application Support ->Viscosity -> OpenVPN -> 1) to a CD, USB drive, or via some other method, to your PC.
- You will need to go into EACH of the numbered folders, and copy the config.conf file if you want more then one connection on windows. You will also need to rename each config.conf to a UNIQUE name. We suggest opening the file and reading the "remote vpn.XXX.witopia.net" and naming the connection that.
- Place the files into your newly created WiTopia.Net config folder (step #1 should have created it) located at:
- C:\Program Files\WiTopia.Net\config (Do NOT change the location to another drive or folder)
- The goal is to have your files in this folder look like this:
- You should now be able to connect from Windows, although a restart never hurt anyone. If you run into problems and are running Vista, follow the steps in Q9 of our wiki FAQ.
You have personalVPN-SSL for Windows and wish to use your VPN account on your Mac
- Download and install Tunnelblick from here (download the latest version which should be the top of the list)
- Copy your security credentials (ca.crt, name.key & name.crt) and Gateway configs from C:\Program Files\personalvpn\config on your Windows computer to a CD, USB drive, or via some other method to your Mac.
- Place the files into the "Configurations" folder in your user Library folder located here: ~/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick/Configurations/ (double-click on your Macintosh HD -> Users -> home folder -> Library -> Application Support -> Tunnelblick -> Configurations).
- You must rename each config file to use the proper extension. Windows uses .ovpn and Mac uses .conf. So 001 - us Atlanta.ovpn must be renamed to 001 - us Atlanta.conf
- skipping this step will result in a "no dev tun/tap" error message when you try to connect.
- You must edit each config to remove a windows only option from the config.
- Open the folder you placed all the configs in step #1
- Open the first config file in textedit (right click and choose to open with -> textedit)
- Scroll toward the bottom and locate the line show-net-up and DELETE this line
- Save the config
- The goal is to have your files in this folder look like this
- ca.crt
- Lots of named locations identical to your windows setup.
- {name}.key
- {name}.crt
- After you've completed the above, goto your Applications folder and double-click on the Tunnelblick application to start personalVPN. We also suggest reviewing the CONNECTING and TESTING sections of this wiki article for optimal performance.
