General Questions

I have my own router, can I connect it to the WiTopia service?

Yes, soon you will be able to use your own router to connect to WiTopia's CloakBox service! We're in the process of deploying a customer owned equipment service (CloakBox COE) where we will offer installation, configuration and support of a customer provided router. The router will need to support dd-wrt firmware (you can check compatibility here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database) with OpenVPN in order to work with this service. We will soon be providing a list of tested routers that we can assist you with upgrading to dd-wrt and configuring for use as a CloakBox COE! We hope to have this product deployed and available for purchase soon. At this time we do not have an ETA for this service.

How do I login to my CloakBox?

To log into your Cloakbox™, first you must have a computer plugged into port 1, 2, 3, or 4 and then enter the IP address contained in your welcome letter (e.g. http://192.168.20.1) into your web browser as well as the Username and Password listed in the email. The default Username for all new Cloakboxes™ is "admin" without the quotes. The default Password is your WiTopia account number which is on a label on the top of your Cloakbox™ and also on your welcome letter included in the package with your router..

If you lose your password, contact support@witopia.net - DO NOT PRESS THE RESET BUTTON ON THE ROUTER! This will erase your custom configuration and your VPN will no function.

How do I modify/enable wireless on my CloakBox?

All CloakBox units support Wireless setup and by default they are shipped with the factory wireless settings active. If you would like to change the wireless settings please see the following:

Troubleshooting

I just received my CloakBox, but the VPN isn't working.

There are several possible reasons for this. The first step is to ensure you've connected everything correctly.

Verify that the following setup tasks have been completed:

1. Verify your Internet connection is working without the CloakBox present.
2. Connect an Ethernet cable between your existing ISP provided cable or DSL modem and the port marked "Internet" on the back of the CloakBox.
3. Connect a computer or laptop with an Ethernet cable to port 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the CloakBox.
4. If your ISP has provided PPPoE (username and password) information that information may need to be configured on the CloakBox. Obtain this information from your ISP and contact support@witopia.net for assistance.
5. Reboot your computer
6. Go to www.ipchicken.com to see if you have Internet access, your IP address will be displayed if you do.

The CloakBox is connected properly to my Internet connection and my computer but it still doesn't seem to work. What next?

The first step any time the CloakBox is not functioning properly is to remove the power from your ISP modem or router, as well as the CloakBox for 1-2 minutes. Then, reconnect the power to the ISP provided modem or router, wait 2 minutes, and then reconnect the power to the CloakBox. After 1-2 minutes, using a computer directly connected to the CloakBox via an Ethernet cable connected to port 1,2,3 or 4 try visiting http://www.ipchicken.com to see if you get a WiTopia or Fullmeshnetworks IP address. If you do, this process worked and your CloakBox is functioning properly!

In some cases your ISP or the location you are in may not allow, or block VPN traffic. In this case, you may try our alternate port (TCP 443) servers. This is a common solution to many initial CloakBox connection issues and should be tried before moving on to additional troubleshooting steps.

My CloakBox seems to lose it's Internet connection and must be rebooted

Try enabling a feature on the router called "WDS/Connection Watchdog"

 1. Login to the CloakBox and go to the "administration" tab.
 2. Then select the "keep-alive" sub-tab.
 3. Enable "WDS/Connection Watchdog".
 4. Set the interval to 300 (this is in seconds).
 5. Sst the IP address to test/ping to 4.2.2.2 or 8.8.8.8 (either one is fine)
 6. Click "save".
 7. Click "apply settings"
 8. Unplug the power cord and reconnect it to ensure the router is rebooted and properly applies and begins using the newly configured settings.

DO NOT PRESS THE RESET BUTTON ON THE CLOAKBOX™
